Tim Janus, popularly known to competitive-eating fans as ‘Eater X,’ passed away at 49. The former ‘Amazing Race’ contestant breathed his last on September 16, 2026, following complications from a long battle with cancer, according to Major League Eating.Janus’ story was never just about how much food he could eat. Behind the painted face, Viking-inspired mask and larger-than-life competitive persona was a man whose interests ranged from reality television and game shows to wildlife adventures, whistling and even a possible career in the US Foreign Service.
Who was Tim Janus?
He was born on December 31, 1976, in Simsbury, Connecticut. His early years gave little indication that he would eventually make a name for himself in competitive eating. After earning a degree in political science and public policy from Southern Methodist University, he later made New York City’s East Village his home.In 2006, his life took an unexpected turn. Janus entered the world of competitive eating and quickly became one of its recognisable personalities. Over the years, he rose to No. 2 in the world rankings, behind Joey Chestnut. His appearance was impossible to miss, featuring painted designs on his face and a Viking-style mask. Janus developed the “Eater X” persona that became closely associated with him.
From tiramisu to ramen, Tim Janus’s eating records were unusual
Janus wasn’t known for competing in just one type of food contest. His career included championships involving desserts, noodles and sushi.According to Major League Eating, he became a world tiramisu-eating champion after consuming four pounds in six minutes. He also won a world ramen noodle-eating championship after eating 10.5 pounds in eight minutes.Then came sushi. Janus became a world nigiri sushi champion after consuming 141 pieces in six minutes. He also competed at the famous Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest, one of the most recognisable events in competitive eating.Yet Janus seemed to see the sport as something bigger than simply setting records. During his induction into the Major League Eating Hall of Fame, he said, “I tell people that I learned a lot about life by eating hot dogs and I mean it. If you care about something and work hard at it, it makes you better.”
How did Tim Janus land on ‘The Amazing Race’?
Janus’ competitive spirit eventually took him somewhere far removed from an eating table. In 2018, he teamed up with Joey Chestnut for Season 30 of The Amazing Race. The pair swapped food challenges for international travel, physical tasks and unfamiliar situations.Their journey ended with an eighth-place finish. But ‘The Amazing Race’ wasn’t Janus’ only television appearance. He competed on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, where he won $100,000. He also appeared on Cash Cab, reportedly becoming the show’s biggest winner at the time after taking home $1,600.
The side of ‘Eater X’ many people may not know
Perhaps the most surprising part of Janus’ story was everything he did outside competitive eating. Major League Eating recalled some of the unusual experiences he pursued during his life. He travelled to Australia to track crocodiles and snakes in the wild. He milked a cow. He even appeared as a television weatherman. And then there was his whistling talent.Janus reportedly had a repertoire that included Neil Diamond songs and the Hartford Whalers’ fight song. At one point, he was also accepted into the United States Foreign Service and received an assignment. His plans to work abroad, however, were affected by his illness. For someone famous for eating enormous quantities of food, his interests were surprisingly difficult to categorize.
Friends remember Tim Janus beyond the records
Following his death, tributes focused on the person behind the “Eater X” character. Crazy Legs Conti, a fellow competitive eater and Janus’ former roommate, remembered him as someone who followed his own path rather than worrying about conventional expectations.Conti described Janus as “unique, brilliant and beloved by his friends.”Major League Eating also remembered his curiosity and his willingness to pursue whatever caught his attention. Janus is survived by his mother, Lucinda Hannon, his father, Peter Janus, his stepmother, Nancy Janus and his sister, Tess McNair.Major League Eating said a celebration of life is planned in New York City in October.For many viewers, Tim Janus may always be remembered as the eccentric “Eater X” who competed alongside Joey Chestnut on The Amazing Race. But his life tells a much more unexpected story.
