Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga has responded strongly to the backlash he faced for the violence in his movies following the recent tragedy in Raptadu, Andhra Pradesh. This event raised issues regarding violence in movies, with some people wondering if violence depicted in films causes real-life crimes. His response has once again brought the debate over cinema and social responsibility into focus.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga says cinema should not be blamed for every crime
Responding to the criticism, Sandeep Reddy Vanga said that the first reaction to a serious crime should be sympathy for the victims and an effort to understand the real problem. He questioned the practice of blaming cinema whenever a disturbing incident takes place. “When someone commits a heinous crime, the first response should be empathy and an attempt to understand the larger problem, not finding a convenient scapegoat in cinema,” he wrote. The filmmaker also expressed concern over people using tragic incidents to target films and filmmakers instead of focusing on the victims and their families.
The ‘Spirit ‘ director targets critics and calls out personal attacks
Sandeep Reddy Vanga also criticised certain members of the film industry for using such incidents to attack the work of other filmmakers. Without naming anyone, he referred to actors, directors and producers who, according to him, present themselves as social reformers whenever they get an opportunity to criticise another person’s work. He alleged that some critics were more interested in settling personal scores than showing genuine concern for those affected by the tragedy. His comments have added another dimension to the ongoing discussion about artistic freedom and the responsibility of filmmakers.
Tragedies deserve empathy, not opportunism
Concluding his statement, Sandeep Reddy Vanga stressed that tragic incidents should not become opportunities for personal attacks or public criticism. “A tragedy deserves empathy, not opportunism. Learn the difference,” he wrote. He has raised some issues that have created debates regarding the effects of violence in movies and their impact on society. But we need to concentrate on the victims and try to find out the reasons behind the crime and avoid using it for our personal gains. On the other hand, Sandeep Reddy Vanga is busy with the shoot of his upcoming movie ‘Spirit’, which has Prabhas in the lead role. The film is currently being shot and also features Triptii Dimri and Vivek Oberoi in important roles. It is scheduled to release in theatres worldwide on October 29, 2027.
