For 39 years, Marilyn Hampton worked as a custodian at a school district in Texas, US, cleaning buildings and helping children whenever she could. She never attended college and once believed she had failed in life because of it. But decades after she began working at the Aubrey Independent School District, the 76-year-old has received an honour she never imagined. According to WFAA-TV, on October 21, officials announced that a new elementary school would be named after her, recognising the years she spent caring for students and supporting the school community.Hampton’s journey was not one she had always felt proud of. She grew up in a family of eight children and was the only one among her siblings to complete high school. However, she did not go on to college, something that troubled her for years. She later came to see her life differently, particularly after spending much of it working with children. Her job at the school district involved keeping classrooms and other facilities clean, but Hampton did not limit herself to those responsibilities. She helped children with their assignments, bought school supplies for students who needed them and sometimes gave them rides. She also worked at ticket booths during school football games. These were not part of her regular cleaning duties, but they became part of how she contributed to the district.Hampton retired from her custodial position in 2022 after 39 years of service. By then, she had become a familiar figure to students, teachers and staff members. Her years at the district eventually led officials to make the unusual decision of naming the new elementary school being built in Aubrey after her.
When Hampton learn about the honour
The school district did not tell Hampton beforehand that it had decided to name the building after her. Instead, officials invited her to a meeting of the district’s board of trustees on October 21. According to The Guardian, she had been asked to attend under the impression that she would be discussing a school-related matter.During the meeting, superintendent Shannon Saylor asked Hampton to unroll a red carpet near the speaker’s podium. It was a familiar request for someone who had spent years helping prepare school facilities for different activities.Hampton went ahead with the task. But when she opened the carpet, she found a message she had not expected. Printed across it were the words “Marilyn Hampton Elementary School.”She immediately became emotional as people in the room applauded. Covering her face with her hands, Hampton struggled to respond. “You are too good. I wasn’t expecting this. Thank you all. I can’t speak,” she said, according to the New York Post.Board members came forward to hug her, while officials showed her an image of the new school with her name on the building.Hampton then realised she had not brought her phone to record the moment. Saylor joked that she did not need to worry because the announcement would be shared widely.
Hampton’s extraordinary contributions
The district’s decision reflected the role Hampton had played in children’s lives during her years of service. Although her official job was to maintain school buildings, she often spent time helping students in other ways. Some needed assistance with schoolwork, while others required basic classroom supplies. Hampton helped wherever she could. Her involvement extended to school events as well. She worked at football games and remained connected with the wider school community.Saylor said Hampton had made an important contribution to students despite not holding a teaching position. “She may not have the official title of an educator, but she was in every meaningful sense a teacher and an educator at heart,” the superintendent said.According to The Guardian, thousands of students, teachers and staff members had been influenced by Hampton’s commitment during her years at the district. The recognition also meant a great deal to Hampton personally because of her earlier doubts about not attending college.Speaking about how her thinking had changed, she said, “I just thought, ‘You know, Marilyn? God put you where you are supposed to be.’ And I am very happy with the way things turned out.”
What is Marilyn Hampton doing now?
Although Hampton retired from her custodial job in 2022, she has continued spending time with children. According to the New York Post, she now visits the district’s Early Bird Learning Centre, where she has been seen sitting in a rocking chair and feeding a young girl named Claire.Following the school board announcement, the district also presented her with a T-shirt bearing the name of the new elementary school.Hampton later told WFAA that she was still overwhelmed by the recognition. “I still can’t believe it. I haven’t stopped crying,” she said. The new building, previously known as Elementary School Number Five, is scheduled to open in August 2027.
