NEW DELHI: India added seven more medals to its Asian Games 2026 tally on Sunday, but the haul was not enough to keep the country inside the top 10 of the medal standings.India ended Day 8 with 37 medals — four gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze — but slipped from 10th to 12th position. The drop came despite the sizeable medal haul because India did not add a gold, while countries above it continued to accumulate gold medals and increase their overall totals.China continued to dominate the Games after crossing the 200-medal mark, with 119 gold, 48 silver and 38 bronze for 205 medals. Seven medals, but no gold for India

India’s seven medals on Sunday included two silver from squash and five from athletics.Parul Chaudhary produced one of the day’s standout performances, breaking her personal best to win bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. She clocked 9:08.67, a new national record, to claim her second Asian Games steeplechase medal after winning silver at Hangzhou in 2023.Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi won gold in 9:04.36, while Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto Tanui took silver. India’s Ankita finished fourth in a personal-best 9:19.24.Sarvesh Kushare and Ancy Sojan also won silver medals after leading their respective finals for significant periods. Sarvesh cleared 2.25m but finished second to Chinese Taipei’s Chao Hsuan-Fu, while Ancy’s 6.53m was bettered by China’s Huang Yingying, who produced 6.55m with her final attempt.Harita Bhadra had earlier won bronze in the women’s 200m in 23.20 seconds, edging Japan’s Ido Abigeirufuka by 0.01 seconds.Tejaswin Shankar completed India’s athletics haul with bronze in the decathlon. He won the final event, the 1500m, in 4:33.09 and finished with 7,934 points. Japan’s Yuma Maruyama won gold with 8,123 points.

Squash misses gold, boxing adds three assured medals

India’s wait for a squash singles gold continued as both Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh lost their finals to Malaysian opponents. Sivasangari Subramaniam beat Anahat 11-4, 11-4, 11-7, while Ng Eain Yow defeated Abhay 11-9, 11-5, 11-5.Anahat’s silver was historic as she became the first Indian woman to reach an Asian Games squash singles final.India’s medal prospects received a boost in boxing, with Parveen Hooda, Ankush Panghal and Narender all reaching the semifinals and assuring themselves medals.The day’s results underline the medal-table challenge: India won seven more medals but added no gold, while countries above it continued to build their gold-medal totals.
