Mohammad Kaif believes India could face a major selection headache in the T20I format within the next six months, with the former batter predicting that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will force his way into the first-choice side.Kaif feels the teenage sensation’s emergence could eventually leave either Tilak Varma or Shivam Dube fighting for a place in the playing XI, despite Tilak currently being India’s vice-captain.“I understand that Tilak is the vice-captain. But vice-captains have also been dropped before. I do not want to go there. Shivam Dube is not scoring in every game and still has to prove himself. Fielding is also his weakness, and he is not a proper bowling all-rounder. He is only playing as a batter. After six months, either Tilak or Dube will be out. You will have to remove one, and Sooryavanshi will play. I am saying this right now”, Kaif said on his YouTube channel.Kaif pointed to Sooryavanshi’s performances beyond T20Is as another reason for his prediction. The teenager also made an impact in the Duleep Trophy and even bowled during the tournament, adding another dimension to his game.“Sooryavanshi scored in the Duleep Trophy as well. He has improved his game. He was even bowling there. So he has understood that if he can bowl a few overs, he will have an advantage,” he added.The numbers behind Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise are difficult to overlook. In his first six T20Is of 2026, he has scored 193 runs at an average of 32.17 and a strike rate of 189.22. He has found the boundary once every 3.4 deliveries and hit a six every 7.2 balls.His IPL campaign strengthened that case further. Sooryavanshi finished the season with 776 runs at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.51, including 72 sixes.Those numbers have already shifted the conversation around the teenager. Rather than being viewed solely as a young player being gradually introduced to international cricket, Sooryavanshi is increasingly making a case for a regular place in India’s T20I setup.Tilak’s numbers, meanwhile, remain respectable on the surface. He has scored 395 runs in T20Is in 2026 at an average of 35.91 and a strike rate of 154.90.However, the timing of some of those runs adds another layer to the debate. His fifty came in the fifth and final T20I against England, by which point India had already lost the series, and India went on to lose that match as well.Another notable contribution came during the Zimbabwe tour, although the quality of the opposition bowling was not necessarily of the highest pedigree.There have also been occasions when Tilak has found it difficult to rotate the strike after being promoted up the order or arriving at the crease earlier than expected, particularly against spin. At the other end of the innings, however, he has shown greater effectiveness as a finisher, including against Jofra Archer.That creates a contrast in the type of batter India could eventually have to choose between. Sooryavanshi represents an extreme-tempo approach built around relentless boundary-hitting, while Tilak offers greater adaptability and the ability to construct an innings.Dube’s numbers also make the selection debate more complicated than Kaif’s assessment might suggest.The all-rounder has scored 415 T20I runs in 2026 at an average of 31.92 and a strike rate of 170.78. At the T20 World Cup, he scored 235 runs at a strike rate of 169.06, giving India substantial returns from a player primarily selected for his power-hitting.The more pertinent question surrounding Dube is his bowling contribution.He has bowled only 26 overs across 23 T20Is in 2026, taking 12 wickets while conceding 12.44 runs per over. Those figures underline how India have largely used him as a batter who can provide occasional overs rather than as a genuine bowling all-rounder.That distinction could become important if Sooryavanshi continues to add bowling to his skill set.For now, India have a number of options in their T20I batting group. But Kaif’s six-month prediction has put the spotlight firmly on a question that could become increasingly difficult for the selectors to avoid: how long can a player with Sooryavanshi’s scoring numbers remain outside the first-choice XI?
